Trenitalia: Tickets, Fares and How Trains Work in Italy
By Vincenzo GrecoFacts checked October 24, 2026
The short answer
Trenitalia is Italy's main railway company, running Frecce long-distance trains, Intercity trains and regional trains. You buy tickets on its app and website, at station machines or at ticket offices. Frecce and Intercity tickets are for one train, and the cheapest fares can't be changed or refunded. Paper regional tickets must be validated before boarding, and long-distance delays of 60 minutes earn 25% compensation, 50% at 120 minutes.

What Trenitalia runs
Trenitalia is the main railway company in Italy, according to a 2023 decision of Italy's competition authority (AGCM). It runs three families of trains, and each has its own ticket rules.
| Train | What it is | Ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Frecce ("arrows"): Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca | Long-distance trains; Trenitalia's fare rules list Frecciarossa and Frecciargento as AV (alta velocità, high-speed) | For one train on one day |
| Intercity and Intercity Notte (night) | Long-distance trains with first class (Plus) and second class (Easy) | For one train on one day |
| Regionale | Regional, fast regional and metropolitan trains | Depends on the ticket type, explained below |
The Frecce offer up to four service levels: Standard, Premium, Business and Executive. Regional fares carry region-specific exceptions, and some regional lines are run by other companies, such as Trenord.
Italo, a privately owned company, is the only other high-speed passenger operator in Italy, according to the same decision. The Italo guide compares the two.
How to buy a ticket
You can buy Trenitalia tickets through:
- the Trenitalia app and trenitalia.com
- self-service machines in stations, which sell regional and long-distance tickets and take banknotes, coins and cards
- station ticket offices and authorized travel agencies
- tobacconists and shops in the PUNTOLIS and Mooney networks, for regional tickets
- Tap&Tap, on some regional routes: tap a Visa, Mastercard or American Express contactless card on a validator marked with the Tap&Tap symbol
Tap&Tap buys one adult, second-class ticket per card. If a conductor checks you, show the last four digits of the card you tapped.
Frecce and Intercity tickets bought online are ticketless. You board with the PNR, the booking code in your confirmation email, and show it to staff. If you lose the PNR or the receipt, Trenitalia treats you as having no ticket and charges the fare plus a surcharge. Screenshot the confirmation before you travel.
Tickets are personal, so carry a passport or ID: staff can ask for it. You can change the passenger name for free until departure.
On national trains, children under 4 travel free without their own seat. Children from 4 to under 15 pay 50% of the Base fare.
Base, Economy and Super Economy fares
On Frecce and Intercity, the price depends on the fare type and on how many seats remain at each price level. The cheaper the fare, the fewer changes it allows.
| Base | Economy | Super Economy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| On sale until | Departure | Midnight, 2 days before travel | Midnight, 6 days before travel |
| Change date or time | Yes, as often as you like before departure and once within 1 hour after; pay any difference | Yes, same route and train category, pay the difference to the current Base price | No |
| Refund | Up to departure, minus 20% | No | No |
| Take a different train | Same category, within 1 hour before or after yours, tell staff first, €10 penalty | No | No |
| Change the passenger name | Free, until departure | Free, until departure | Free, until departure |
Two details matter. If you change a Base ticket on the Frecce and the new price is lower, Trenitalia does not refund the difference. An Economy ticket you change becomes a Base ticket.
Refunds go back to the card or payment method you used. A ticketless Frecce or Intercity ticket is not valid on regional trains.
Fixed Trenitalia prices, as listed on trenitalia.com in October 2026:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Leonardo Express, Roma Termini to Fiumicino airport | €14 (4 tickets for €40) |
| Italia in Tour, second-class regional trains for 3 consecutive days | €35 per adult |
| Italia in Tour, 5 consecutive days | €59 per adult |
| Trenitalia Pass, Easy, adult, 3 journeys in 7 days | €139 |
| Bicycle supplement on regional trains, for the day | €3.50 |
| Dog on Frecce and Intercity | €5 Sunday to Friday, €1 on Saturday |
Regional tickets and validation
Regional tickets come in several formats, and only the paper one needs stamping. Keep any ticket until you leave the arrival station.
| Format | Where you get it | Validation | How long it is valid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper ticket | Ticket offices, machines, tobacconists, agencies | Stamp it in a validator at your departure station before the train leaves | 4 hours from validation |
| Digital Regional Ticket | App, website, station ticket offices, enabled travel agencies | Automatic at your train's scheduled departure | Only the train you chose, until it arrives |
| Electronic Regional Ticket (group, day, bike and season tickets bought online) | App, website | None | 4 hours from your chosen train's departure, on the same route |
A paper ticket can be validated until 11:59 p.m. on the date printed on it. Some regions set their own validity exceptions. If your 4 hours run out on board, you can ride to your destination but not stop off on the way.
A Digital Regional Ticket can be changed as often as you like. Until 11:59 p.m. the day before, you can change the date and time. On the day of travel, you can change the time until your train's departure. Show it on your phone with the moving green bar.
An older Trenitalia page still says any online regional ticket covers other trains on the same route for 4 hours. The current rules limit that to Electronic Regional Tickets, so board the train your Digital Regional Ticket names.
Riding without a valid ticket costs the full fare plus a fine. Some regions set the fine amount by regional law. Conductors sell or validate tickets on board without a surcharge only in narrow cases: no open ticket office, no working machine and no shop within 350 meters, or no working validator for a paper ticket.
Seat reservations
Frecce and Intercity tickets are for a specific train and day. On Intercity, you can choose an aisle or window seat at no charge. Each Trenitalia Pass journey needs its own seat reservation, which is free.
For regional trains, the Trenitalia app shows seat availability only on trains with a limited number of seats.
Passes, season tickets and loyalty programs
Trenitalia Pass is for foreign citizens who live outside Italy. It covers 3, 4, 7 or 10 journeys on Frecce, Intercity and Intercity Notte, from €139 as of October 2026. Each journey must be reserved. You can get 80% back if you cancel before booking your first journey.
Italia in Tour covers second-class regional trains for 3 or 5 consecutive days. It is not valid on the Cinque Terre stretch between Levanto and La Spezia, on Trenord trains, or with other carriers. It can't be refunded.
Regional season tickets come weekly, monthly and annually, for frequent trips on the same route. They carry your name, so carry ID with them.
CartaFRECCIA is Trenitalia's free loyalty program for the Frecce. You earn 1 point per euro on Frecce tickets. In a calendar year, 1,000 status points bring Argento (silver), 3,000 Oro (gold) and 7,500 Platino (platinum), each with extra points. X-GO is a separate program for Regional and Intercity trips that turns points into cashback.
Carta Verde and Carta Argento, the old youth and senior discount cards, stopped being sold on April 1, 2026. Cards issued earlier stay valid until they expire.
Delays, cancellations and compensation
Two sets of rules apply: EU Regulation 2021/782 on rail passenger rights, and Trenitalia's own General Conditions of Carriage.
If you can expect to arrive 60 minutes or more late, the regulation lets you choose:
- A full refund, with a trip back to your starting point if the journey no longer makes sense.
- Re-routing to your destination at the earliest opportunity, at no extra cost.
- Re-routing at a later date of your choice.
If Trenitalia doesn't tell you the re-routing options within 100 minutes of the scheduled departure, you can book another train, coach or bus yourself. Keep receipts: it must repay necessary and reasonable costs. Beyond 60 minutes, you are also entitled to meals and drinks in reasonable quantity, and a hotel if you are stranded overnight.
Compensation is separate from the refund. It is paid if you travel anyway and arrive late.
% of the ticket price
Single regional tickets qualify at 60 to 119 minutes only if the fare is at least €16, and at 120 minutes only if it is at least €8. No compensation is paid below €4.

Claim within 1 year through the web form or a ticket office, or through the app or call center for ticketless tickets. The EU common claim form is accepted in English. Eligible Digital Regional Tickets are compensated automatically on the card you paid with. Trenitalia pays within 30 days. It may pay in vouchers, but you can ask for money instead.
There is no compensation if you knew about the delay when you bought the ticket. Under EU rules, extraordinary events such as extreme weather or people on the tracks cancel compensation, but not the refund, re-routing or assistance. A strike by railway staff does not count as extraordinary.
If your claim is refused, file a complaint with Trenitalia within 3 months. It must answer within 30 days, or 90 in justified cases. After that, you can escalate to the Autorità di Regolazione dei Trasporti (ART, the transport regulator).
What runs during a strike
On strike (sciopero) days, Trenitalia runs minimum services approved under Law 146/1990. They are:
- Regional trains: 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, Monday to Saturday; 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on public holidays.
- Long-distance trains: a published list of guaranteed trains, on weekdays and holidays.
- Trains already running: they reach their final destination if it is within 1 hour of the strike's start. After that, they may stop short.
Check the guaranteed-trains list on trenitalia.com (search "treni garantiti," guaranteed trains) and the Trenitalia app before you travel. Station notices carry last-minute changes.
Common problems and fixes
Not knowing whether an online ticket needs stamping. Travelers often ask this before boarding. Digital and electronic regional tickets don't need validation, and online Frecce and Intercity tickets are checked with the booking code. Paper regional tickets are the ones that go in the validator.
Fined on board over a ticket. Travelers report being fined on board over tickets they thought were valid. Stamp paper tickets before boarding. Board the train your digital ticket names, or change the time in the app first.
Wanting an earlier or later train. This depends on the ticket. A Base ticket allows a same-category train within an hour either side, for €10, if you tell staff before boarding. Economy and Super Economy don't. A Digital Regional Ticket is changed in the app before departure.
A non-refundable ticket booked for the wrong date. Travelers try to resell these. Changing the passenger name is free until departure, so a friend can use it legitimately. Economy tickets can also move to another date by paying the difference to Base.
Not knowing if your train runs on a strike day. Check the guaranteed list for your train number. If yours isn't on it, a Base ticket can be moved to a guaranteed train.
Planning a longer stay
Most visitors can handle Trenitalia alone with the app and the rules above. If you are planning a longer stay in Italy rather than a vacation, start with moving to Italy from the US.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to validate a Trenitalia ticket bought online?
No. Frecce and Intercity tickets bought online are ticketless and are checked on board with the booking code. Digital Regional Tickets are validated automatically at your train's scheduled departure, and Electronic Regional Tickets need no validation. Only paper regional tickets, bought at ticket offices, machines or shops, must be stamped in a station validator before the train leaves.
Can I get a refund on a Trenitalia ticket?
It depends on the fare. Base tickets can be refunded up to departure with a 20% deduction. Economy and Super Economy tickets cannot be refunded. If your train is cancelled or you can expect to arrive 60 minutes or more late, the rules change. EU rules then give you a full refund or re-routing, whatever fare you bought.
How much compensation does Trenitalia pay for a delay?
On Frecce, Intercity and international trains, Trenitalia pays 25% of the ticket price for a delay of 60 to 119 minutes. At 120 minutes or more, it pays 50%. Frecce passengers also get a 25% bonus for delays of 30 to 59 minutes. Claims must be made within 1 year, and amounts under €4 are not paid.
Do trains run in Italy during a strike?
Some do. Trenitalia guarantees regional trains from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, a published list of long-distance trains, and trains already running if they can reach their destination within 1 hour of the strike's start. Check the guaranteed-trains list on trenitalia.com before you travel.
Who can buy the Trenitalia Pass?
The Trenitalia Pass is for foreign citizens who live outside Italy. It covers 3, 4, 7 or 10 journeys on Frecce, Intercity and Intercity Notte trains, from €139 as of October 2026. Each journey needs a free seat reservation.
Can I take a different train with my Trenitalia ticket?
With a Base ticket on Frecce or Intercity, you can take another train of the same category on the same route. It must leave within 1 hour before or after your booked train, and you tell staff before boarding and pay €10. Economy and Super Economy tickets are valid only on the booked train.
